Who is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Are you considering dental implants? Our Centre Dentaire is the dental center Verdun residents trust with their oral issues, but before you commit to implants, there are a few boxes you should be able to check off to determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants:

1. Your gums are healthy

If your gums aren’t healthy, you may have underlying health issues that could prevent your dentist from being able to proceed with implant surgery.

Unhealthy gums may be a sign of many health issues, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Sjögren’s Syndrome
  • Osteoporosis
  • Anemia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • HIV/AIDS

2. You have enough bone to anchor the implants

During dental implant surgery, a screw is anchored into your jaw bone. If your bone isn’t strong enough to keep the anchor in place — or if there’s not enough bone to hold the anchor — your dentist will probably not be able to proceed with your implants.

3. You’re committed to your oral care

Your new teeth and the gums surrounding them will need solid care. If you’re committed to brushing, flossing, and seeing your dentist regularly, you may be a good candidate for dental implants.

4. Your jaw has stopped growing

Generally speaking, children and teenagers aren’t good candidates for dental implant surgery because their bones are still growing. Most dental implant patients are adults whose bone structures are already fused into their permanent shapes.

5. You’re not pregnant

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, but this isn’t the time to go into dental implant surgery! Check in with our Verdun dental facility after you’ve had your baby, and after you’ve finished breastfeeding (if that’s the route you choose), so we can evaluate your potential for implants.

6. You’re not a heavy smoker

Smoking hinders healing in the mouth. Dental implant surgery requires the cleanest possible environment in order for your gums to heal properly. If you’re a heavy smoker, the success of your surgery will be hindered.

7. You haven’t received high-dose radiation

Radiation can impair the body’s natural ability to repair itself.

Every dental implant surgery starts with a consultation, and it’s important to find professionals you trust to guide you throughout the process. If you’re looking for the dental centre Verdun residents look forward to visiting for all of their oral needs, you’ve come to the right place.
