Orthodontie interceptive
Orthodontics for children
Interceptive orthodontics for children consists in intervening in young children having occlusal problems. Certain procedures are performed to prevent conditions that may affect jaw growth or damage the teeth, gums, and bones. It is important to consult as soon as possible if you notice anything abnormal in your child. Once detected, we try to solve malocclusions as early as possible in order to make future procedures simpler and, above all, less expensive!
Premature tooth wear caused by an imbalance between the upper and lower jaw width is one of the most common problems observed. Because the jaw is misaligned, the upper teeth bite into the lower teeth and wear them out. When the teeth are not touching (open bite), chewing and speech problems can occur. If malpositioned teeth cause aesthetic issues or wear on the teeth and gums, an initial procedure may be essential to correct the problem. An eye should also be kept on children who suck their thumb as this can cause tooth shifting or jaw misalignment.
Phase 1 Orthodontics
This type of orthodontic treatment is intended for children with major dental problems. It consists in trying to slow down and correct certain problems as a preparatory stage for other procedures. In fact, other corrective measures may sometimes not even be necessary later on.
Phase 1 orthodontic treatment will, among other things, reduce the length, cost, and complexity of future procedures. This type of treatment is also effective in better controlling jaw growth and correcting any imbalance. A Phase-1 procedure can also often enable patients to avoid surgery or the extraction of permanent teeth. Another benefit of this treatment is that your child may stop sucking their thumb!
At each visit, we assess your child’s dental development. Don’t hesitate to contact us at 514-367-0300 if you have any questions.
