Our Clinic has probably reinforced the fact that some foods and drinks are especially bad for teeth because they can stain them or contribute to decay. Soda and coffee are notoriously known for leaving their marks behind on teeth long after they’re gone.
But, we don’t always need to focus on the negative. We know which drinks you shouldn’t drink, but which drinks are on the should-drink list? Let’s take a look!
1. Milk
When you were a child, you likely knew that milk does a body good. It’s true!
Somewhere along the path of life, a lot of adults fall out of the habit of drinking a good glass of milk with their breakfasts and dinners. If this sounds familiar, consider adding this delightful drink back into your diet.
Milk contains lots of calcium, which is imperative for healthy teeth and bones. If you’re lactose intolerant, vegan, or otherwise unable to drink cow’s milk, calcium-fortified soy milk provides an excellent alternative.
Be mindful that milk does contain natural sugars. This is why it’s important not to let babies have their bottles in their mouths for too long; that can cause the sugars to stick around on little ones’ teeth, ultimately contributing to bacteria growth and tooth decay.
2. Green and Herbal Tea
Black tea has a standing spot on the “bad for your teeth” list, but if you’re a tea drinker, you don’t have to forgo your favorite drink altogether.
Green and herbal teas don’t contain ingredients that stain your teeth. They also come with other benefits, such as polyphenols, which help fight bacteria. A combination of antioxidants, catechin compounds, and anti-inflammatory elements make green tea good for your teeth, as well as your overall body health.
3. Water
Water might seem like a boring liquid to include on this list, but any Montreal dentist will tell you it’s one of the best drinks you can consume. Besides keeping your body hydrated, which is essential for good health, water helps your mouth produce saliva. Saliva is your body’s first line of defense against the bacteria that can cause plaque, gum disease, and decay.
