When it comes to cavities, many of our patients just need one-off fillings when those hard-to-reach areas begin to decay. Sometimes, however, we have patients who seem to be prone to cavities, either because of genetics or oral health habits that aren’t optimal.

In either case, there are some things you can do to minimize your tendency for cavities. Let’s take a look!

1. Brush with fluoride toothpaste after you eat and drink

You know brushing twice a day is important, but if you have a tendency to get cavities easily, you need to brush more often. Make sure you keep a toothbrush on hands so you can wipe away the bacteria and debris as soon as you’re finished eating and drinking. Keep travel toothbrushes in your purse, briefcase, or glove box so you can easily brush your teeth without hauling a whole tube of toothpaste around.

2. Use mouthwash

Cavities usually occur because bad bacteria finds its way to the space between your gums and teeth, then eats away at each tooth’s enamel. This is why mouthwash is important. It’s able to get between your teeth and wash out the areas where your toothbrush can’t quite reach.

Dry mouth is also a common cause for cavities because saliva naturally helps usher away bacteria. If you’re not producing enough saliva, talk to your dentist about mouthwashes that can help induce more moisture.

3. Visit your dentist regularly

We can’t stress this enough! You need to see your dentist at least every six months (although, she may recommend quarterly visits if you’re prone to cavities). This is because leftover food produces bacteria, which turns into plaque. Plaque becomes tartar, which can only be removed with special dental tools.

4. Drink water throughout the day

Water helps wash away bad bacteria. Plus, it’s just good for your body overall. Make it a point to drink at least eight 16-ounce glasses of water throughout the day. This will help keep your mouth moisturized while providing the rest of your body the hydration it needs to stay healthy.

Dre Nathalie Kadoch is proud to be the cosmetic dentist Montreal residents trust.
