(And if that’s the case, chances are you’ve been conducting yourself in an environmentally responsible manner.) The zero-waste movement, first introduced by Béa Johnson, is obviously ideal to decrease the amount of waste. In short, it consists in refusing, reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting. But what about dentistry and, especially, dental hygiene? Here are a few tips to help you increase your awareness and contribute to the welfare of the environment.

Natural toothpaste

If you regularly visit health food stores and bulk shops, you’re probably already familiar with the different types of natural-ingredient toothpaste available on the market. You’ll find some with or without fluoride, with added xylitol, sold in jars, tubes, or in bulk. Some people even make their own toothpaste. Should you want to give it a try, beware of abrasives like baking soda or charcoal, which can damage the surface of your teeth. The best solution is to ask us which option is best for you and your family.

Eco-friendly toothbrush

Kick out the traditional plastic toothbrush and go for a greener option! A wide selection of toothbrushes that are better for the environment is available to those seeking a more environmentally friendly alternative. If you have to use plastic, at least try to use a toothbrush with replacement heads or a recycled toothbrush. For an even more eco-friendly solution, use a toothbrush made of bamboo, a material that grows quickly and is compostable.

Saving water

Does turning off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth really helps save water? According to statistics, the bathroom is the place in the home where the most water is used. Brushing your teeth for three minutes with the tap turned on wastes about 36 litres of water each time. That’s the equivalent of several baths a year for a family of four. Turning off the tap while you brush your teeth is a simple action that’ll make your routine more eco-responsible.

Making the right eco-friendly choices for your hygiene is easier than you think!
